David has been a leader in the opposition to the LEAP pipeline proposal, which would divert 100 million gallons of water per day from Tippecanoe County aquifers to Boone County. David sponsored the resolution that officially declared the City of West Lafayette's opposition to the Indiana Economic Development Corporation's proposed pipeline. David continues to organize the community against the pipeline because he knows that our community's basic needs are at stake.
David has supported policies that ensure that resources will be utilized in an environmentally sustainable fashion so that we can leave our communities and the planet in a better condition for the future. David has supported West Lafayette's carbon neutrality resolutions and the Greater Lafayette Climate Action Plan. He regularly collaborates with City Council colleagues, city officials, advisory commissions, and community members to address environmental sustainability concerns.
Along with Mayor Dennis, David sponsored the ordinance that empowered West Lafayette residents to oppose transient rentals (e.g. Airbnb rentals) in their neighborhoods. David is a leader in advocating for the availability of housing for people who wish to live in West Lafayette full time and the stability of the student population served by the West Lafayette Community School Corporation.
David has consistently advocated for home rule for Indiana counties and cities and has opposed state encroachment. Additionally, David is known for insisting that taxpayer money be spent wisely and not wastefully. He will continue to advocate on these issues if re-elected as City Councilor.
David has extensive experience in representative and legislative bodies and knows both how to be effective and how to consult others. He answers every message he receives from constituents and hosts monthly “Meet Your Councilor” sessions.
As an educator himself, David maintains that education is an investment and not merely an expense. Parental involvement in a child’s education is essential. David Sanders has been a champion of academic freedom and believes that public funds for education should be used for public education. Teachers are professionals whose endeavors on behalf of our children should be valued and rewarded. The challenges faced by the public schools in our rural areas need to be addressed.
David has a well-established reputation as an opponent to government invasion of personal privacy and will continue to be vocal in these efforts.
As a long-term supporter of benefits for veterans, David has fought for the access to healthcare that they have earned. He is also a regular visitor to the residents of the Indiana Veterans’ Home.
We have learned from the War in Ukraine that Indiana agriculture is not only an essential component of our economy and necessary for feeding America, but it is also critical to our national security. Agriculture is going to be completely transformed in the next decade by CRISPR and similar technologies, and it is important to have legislators such as myself who understand both the opportunities and challenges that their deployment entails. One thing attending six 4-H County Fairs in 2022 has taught me is hope about the direction of our youth. To see all those young people who have risen before dawn to tend to their animals and who take such pride in their endeavors is inspiring and belies the refrain that this generation of young people is unwilling to work hard. I have seen devotion and dedication, and I expect that their attitude will create a future generation of service to the good of society.
As a biomedical researcher, David is a proponent for employing scientific and social-work approaches to addressing substance abuse and unacceptable levels of infant mortality. Inequities in access to healthcare facilities as well as to medical information, especially in our more rural areas, are a major contributor to the problem.
